Am I in the Park?

Uses your phone's GPS and the official boundaries to tell you if you're inside a POTA park or WWFF area (and which references count from that spot), how far you are from the line, and which way to walk. Near a SOTA summit it checks if you're high enough for the activation zone.

Planning at home? Tap any spot on the map to check it.

Tap CHECK WHERE I AM. Your location stays on your phone; it is only used to ask the boundary map about that spot.

Good to know

  • This is a guide, not a ruling. POTA and WWFF count the official boundary of the park or area. Signs, the park's own map and the park staff win over any app.
  • Official boundaries come from the agencies that own the land: Kentucky's state GIS files (the same ones Park Commander uses) and, for every state, the USGS Protected Areas Database (PAD-US). They can still lag behind new land deals.
  • OpenStreetMap is a free map drawn by volunteers. Its park outlines are often close, but they can be off, out of date, or missing land, and they are not official. We only show them when no official boundary answers, in pink, so you know to double-check. KPC-drawn outlines (yellow dashes) come from OpenStreetMap too, for Kentucky parks that have no official map file.
  • SOTA: the activation zone is everything within 82 ft (25 m) of height below the summit. We compare the summit's height with the ground height where you stand (USGS elevation map in the US). It's close, not exact, so if it's borderline, walk higher. Summits come from the SOTA summits list, copied weekly.
  • WWFF: WWFF areas come from the WWFF directory (copied weekly). In the US most match a POTA park, so they show up together.
  • GPS isn't perfect. A phone is usually good to 15-50 ft outdoors, worse under trees, in valleys or inside a car. If you're closer to the line than that, walk farther in.
  • Daniel Boone National Forest: its outer line includes private land and towns. We also check the national database to see if your exact spot is Forest Service land.
  • Easements and closed land: some land in the database is private with a conservation easement, or closed to the public. We flag those so you don't count them.
  • Your location is not saved or sent to KPC. It is only used in your browser to ask the boundary services about that spot.
KPC tools and guides are planning aids, not official sources. We make mistakes. Do your own research and check official maps. KPC is an independent ham radio club, not part of Parks on the Air®, SOTA or WWFF.
